A Tracing of a Hand

take the which one of the trading spaces cast are you? quiz!

The wake wasn't bad. I only went to the afternoon part of it and to the small lunch at Aunt Mary's afterwards. I was able to see Eric and Ryan as well. I knew how they felt but they were holding up. They were much the same way I was. It hasn't sunk in yet, not completely. They did have more time with their dad, knowing he would die however. They had more time to prepare. As Aunt Debbie would say, thank God for small favours.

From what I understand Jamie and Aunt Debbie are on the outs, which is a shame because it's partly Dad's doing. He fosters hate towards her and tells Jamie she's bad. He has to make up his own mind about her, but he seems to just be taking what Dad says for gospel truth. It's disappointing. amazingly Dad and I had enough time to have a spat. It was about Queen's. Dad blindly defends anything he is a part of. He is the head pressman at Queen's Printing. He has it in his mind that Queen's is the best in Canada. Wrong, for one thing. U of T is ranked higher. Queen's is ranked third. Quite high, yes but Queen's can be a bit of a jerk. They have the highest requirements for a lesser education then U of T gives. They also want to charge ivy league price tuition without raising the standards for education. They have great programs and they're a damn good school but they're far from perfect which is what Dad would believe. He thinks he knows everything about Queen's. If he were a professor or the Dean, I would be more inclined to believ his tales. However, this little case brought some things to light as to Dad's ignorance within Queen's. Queen's offered, Brent's friend Sam entrance into Queen's with a 70% average. They wanted him to play football for them. They had lowered their requirements by over 10% in exchange for him playing football. Dad says it didn't happen. I know it did. Brent knew it did. We both told him it had actually happened. Dad said no, it didn't. He said it couldn't be official, he also said that he knew how things worked (bull because he's only a printer, not actually involved in admission and administration and the like) and that sort of thing just didn't happen. It had not happened for 20 years according to him. I think he pulled that number out of his ass because it had happened last year to one of Sam's friends. He is now playing for Queen's with a high school average of 70%. The cut off is actually in the high 80's to 90's. 70%, yeah, I think I have made my point clear. I stopped arguing with him because he was being thick skulled and changing his story to suit his arguement. I was proud of Brent though, he stood by me and argued the point with me instead of letting my dad intimidate him. It was wonderful.

On a funnier note, today something memorable happened. As I have mentioned, I hate Images and Ideas. The teacher, Jack is an imbecile. He seems to make up facts out of his ass and passes it off as a universal truth. It's as though he gets all his information from documentaries and then just tries to remember what he watched.

Anyhow, we are supposed to listen to his 'lecture' and then draw something. We are supposed to be inspired from his talking. The stupid people are, but everyone else who knows anything about religion, science, politics, philosophy, or history know he's full of it. Lately the class has just been drawing garbage and going up and talking about it. We have to present our drawings 5 times in order to get full marks for them. Our presentations have dwindled down to 15 seconds a piece and yet Jack is always finding something to say about them, no matter how little effort we put into them. We have all been getting really annoyed. It is essentially, a waste of our time.

Today Jack talked about the history of the phone and television (how inspiring) and we all drew our half assed pictures and taped them up to the board. There was one that stood out. The owner of this picture eventually came up to present her drawing and said, "This is a tracing of my hand. I turned it into a turkey." She walked back to her seat as the class broke into applause. It was pretty close to a standing ovation. Regardless, he found something to say even about that. He said she should have added a wheelbarrow and it would resemble an american classic. He didn't sound like he was being facetious.

It was a proud day for us all.
